What makes a pro recording pro? What is the “sound” that the experts get and how do you make your records sound more professional?

The simple answer is there is no easy answer. However, with careful listening and a little experience you can create exceptional results with modest equipment.

Good mixing begins ear

The first and most important thing of equipment is - who knows? Anyone? It’s your ears! Sorry to tell you this, but listening to ten hours Rave at 110dB can do nothing for them and you may too give your mix to a turtle as attempt to combine with misused ears.

Listen to commercial recordings of mixes you enjoy, analyse them listen to the effects and get to know what constitutes the type of sound you’re after.

Mixing secrets

There is no hidden key to getting a fantastic sound, but when we needed to sum up the key of mixing in two words it would be that - EQ and compression. Okay that’s three words.

These are likely the two main tools used by specialist producers. But like any gear, if you do not understand how to use them you’ll be dividing Habitat tables rather than Chippendale chairs.

That is where your ears and expertise come in. Here we’ve assembled some production ideas, hints, tips and suggestions but they could just be guidelines and have to be accommodated to suit your own material. There are no presets you are able to switch into make a bad recording sound great. And when your original substance has been badly recorded not even Abbey Road could salvage your mix. But follow these suggestions and see how much your mixtures improve.

Get the level right

You can not push the levels when recording sensibly as you can when tape tape but you still wish to have as much signal into the system as you can. This means watching the levels quite carefully for cutting, and recording at an even and constant degree.

Some recording software lets you track and set the input from inside. Some expect you to use the soundcard’s mixer while others have no facility for internally adjusting the input level and expect one to set this at origin.

Your ears are just as great as the monitors they listen to. DO NOT hope to produce a great, pro mix on tiny computer speakers.

Oddly enough, you don’t necessarily need the most expensive Mic. Many leading artists use what some may call “average” Mics because they work well and get the business finished. You are able to invest a wad on a large diaphragm capacitor Mic (yes, they’re great for vocals) if you’ve got the lolly but check out lively Mics that are a lot more affordable and can be turned to several tasks.

Mixing MIDI and sound

Among the wonderful things about computer-based recording is the components can so easily be altered, processed and edited. Additionally, it is so easy to combine MIDI and audio tracks and lots of musicians use a combo of sample loops, MIDI components and audio recording.

Audio recordings are usually guitar and acoustic instruments such as the sax and vocals. Incidentally, the very best method to record guitars is by adhering a Mic in front of its speakers. You’re able to DI them and process them afterwards and this may be cleaner but for a natural guitar sound a Miced amp is difficult to beat.

Sound Recordist London ’s not necessary to record drums reside and, in fact, it’s hard to perform and keep a modern sound. The quality of the gear which makes drum noises nowadays is such that anyone with a fantastic riff can seem like a professional.
